Description
by Maeve McGrathSet within a shadowed, dreamlike jungle of layered blue, Mysteries in the Grove evokes a place where the living world and the spirit realm entwine. Sculpted from dense, textured drywall, the vertical surface mimics cascading rain, tangled vines, or veils of mist. Within this richly wrought canopy, faint human-like forms emerge—some clearly outlined, others dissolving into the forest as if summoned by memory or grief. They may be ancestors. They may be watchers. They may be the parts of ourselves that linger in hidden places long after we’ve moved on.
The palette is dominated by nocturnal blues—cobalt, ink, stormshadow—interrupted by sudden glints of crimson, tarnished gold, and ephemeral lilac. These flashes read like emotional signatures—traces of past lives or unspoken longing flickering through the thicket. A faint arch in the center suggests a bridge or a portal, as if inviting the viewer to step through to the other side—not to escape, but to understand.
In this painting, McGrath conjures a grove not of trees, but of souls—a place where stories gather in silence and the past is never fully gone. The jungle lives, breathes, remembers. And within it, spirits wait—not to haunt, but to bear witness.
